American Express Personal Loans: Rates, Fees and Who Can Apply

Independent guideUpdated Provider: American Express (American Express National Bank)

American Express Personal Loans are not open to everyone: you need an American Express Card and an offer in your online account before you can apply. If you have one, you get a fixed-rate installment loan with no origination fee. Here is what American Express published when we checked on September 30, 2026, and what to compare before you accept an offer.

How American Express Personal Loans work

American Express Personal Loans are unsecured loans for personal, family or household expenses, such as consolidating credit card debt, a major purchase, home repairs or a big life event. They are issued by American Express National Bank and are separate from your Card accounts.[2][3]

  • Loans start at $3,500. The most you can borrow depends on your creditworthiness and other factors, and it is shown when you view your offer.
  • Fixed interest rates and fixed monthly installments, with repayment terms of 12 to 60 months.
  • Most applicants get a decision within seconds, though it can take longer if American Express needs more information.
  • Money is sent to your bank account in as fast as one day after you sign the loan agreement and complete verification; your bank may take longer to post it.
  • You manage the loan from your American Express online account, where you can see the balance, payment amounts and due dates.

A Personal Loan is not a Card product. It does not earn Membership Rewards points, cash back or other Card benefits, and it carries no Card insurance.[2][3]

Who can apply, and who it suits

American Express Personal Loans are available only to eligible Card Members. The loan page's disclosures say you must be an eligible Basic Card Member. The FAQ adds that you must be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen or a resident of the U.S. or its territories, and have an active American Express Consumer Card.[1][2]

American Express also limits repeat borrowing. After you accept a Personal Loan, you cannot apply for another until at least 60 days after you signed the latest loan agreement, and only if you receive a new pre-approved offer. You cannot hold more than two active American Express Personal Loans and/or Business Loans at the same time.[3]

  • Our view of a likely fit: a Basic Card Member who already sees an offer, wants one fixed payment, and plans to pay off debt with other lenders or cover a one-time cost.
  • Our view of a weaker fit: anyone without an Amex consumer Card, anyone who wants to pay down an Amex card balance, and anyone borrowing for tuition, property, a business or a car.

Rates, terms and a sample payment

Your offer is based on your creditworthiness and other factors at the time you check. American Express says not all Card Members will be eligible for the lowest APR, the highest loan amount or the same repayment periods, and the APR may change with the repayment period you choose. Your actual APR can vary with the amount and term, but it will not exceed the maximum APR in your pre-approved offer.[1][3]

American Express notes that a longer repayment period may lower the monthly payment but add more total interest. When you see your offer, compare the total repaid for each term shown, not only the monthly amount.[2]

Fees and paying off early

American Express says its Personal Loans have no application or origination fees and no prepayment penalty. You can make as many extra payments as you like, and there is no charge to pay from your online account, including by AutoPay.[1][2]

To pay the loan off early, pay the Outstanding Personal Loan Balance shown in your online account or on your latest invoice. The payment must arrive before the Next Invoice Date on that invoice; otherwise you will owe any extra interest that posts after that date.[2]

Your payment due date is set when you are approved and stays the same day each month; it cannot be changed. The loan amount cannot be increased later either.[2]

How checking for an offer and applying work

  • Log in to your American Express online account to see whether you are pre-approved, how much you can borrow and your rate. American Express says there is no credit score impact to apply, but your score may be affected if you are approved and accept the loan.
  • Apply online: choose the amount and a monthly payment option, and give details such as your income and what the loan is for. Most applicants get a decision within seconds.
  • If you are approved, you have three days to review the terms and sign the loan agreement electronically. If you do not sign in time, the approval is withdrawn.
  • The money goes to a bank account in your name. If you need to add one, you have three days after signing to do so. If American Express cannot verify the account, it cannot send the money and the loan agreement is void.
  • American Express typically sends the money one day after signing and verification. If it has not posted to your bank within two weeks, contact American Express or your bank.

Sources[1][2][3]

By applying, you agree that American Express may obtain credit reports and other information about you from consumer reporting agencies and its affiliates. You must also agree to receive documents electronically; without that consent you cannot apply.[3]

Because an offer is personal, the rate, maximum amount and terms you see may differ from the published range. Treat your offer screen and the loan agreement as the final word, and read both before you sign.

Restrictions and fine print

  • Loan money cannot be used for business purposes, post-secondary education expenses, real estate, securities, or a vehicle purchase other than a down payment, or for any purpose prohibited by law.
  • It cannot be used to pay down or consolidate balances on American Express-issued cards.
  • Offers can change: the offer you see today may differ from an earlier one if your creditworthiness or other factors have changed.
  • No more than two active American Express Personal and/or Business Loans at once, and a 60-day wait after signing before you can apply again.
  • The published rates were dated July 19, 2026 on the page we checked on September 30, 2026, and they may have changed since.

What to compare it with

An Amex offer is convenient if you already carry an American Express Card, because the rate and amount are waiting in your account. It is still worth comparing with at least one other quote before you accept.

  • A personal loan from your own bank or credit union.
  • Other lenders that let you check a rate before a full application.
  • For card debt, a balance transfer card, if you can repay within its promotional period. Check the transfer fee and the rate after the promotion ends.
  • Borrowing less, or paying down your highest-rate debt first.

Ask every lender the same questions so you can compare like with like:

  • What is the APR, and is it fixed for the whole term?
  • What will I repay in total over the term I choose?
  • Are there origination, late or returned-payment fees, and is there a prepayment penalty?
  • Does checking my rate use a soft or a hard credit inquiry?
  • Are there limits on what I can use the money for?

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply if I don't have an American Express Card?

No. American Express says Personal Loans are available to eligible Card Members with an active American Express Consumer Card, and you can only apply if you receive an offer to apply.[1][2]

Can I use the loan to pay off my Amex card balance?

No. American Express Personal Loans cannot be used to pay down or consolidate balances on American Express-issued cards. American Express does promote them for consolidating other higher-interest credit card debt.[1][2]

Does checking for an offer affect my credit score?

American Express says there is no credit score impact to apply, but your score may be affected if you are approved and accept the loan. By applying, you agree that it may obtain credit reports about you.[1][3]

How much can I borrow?

At least $3,500, up to your maximum eligible loan amount. That maximum depends on your creditworthiness and other factors, and it is shown only when you view your offer.[2]

What fees are there?

There are no application or origination fees and no prepayment penalty. A $39 fee applies for any month your payment arrives after the due date, and when a payment is returned for insufficient funds.[2]

How fast do I get the money?

In as fast as one day after you sign the loan agreement and complete verification. Your bank may take extra time to post the funds.[1][2]
