LightStream Auto Loans: Rates, Terms and Who Qualifies
A LightStream auto loan pays the money into your own account, which lets you buy from any dealer or private seller as a cash buyer. Its pricing rewards strong credit and AutoPay. Here is what LightStream published on September 28, 2026, and what to compare before you accept an offer.
How LightStream auto loans work
LightStream is the online lending brand of Truist; its site states that lending services are provided by Truist Bank. For vehicles, it lists new car loans, used car loans, private party purchases, auto refinancing, lease buyouts and classic car financing.[1]
The key difference from dealer financing is where the money goes. LightStream deposits the loan into your bank account, so you arrive at the dealership, or meet a private seller, as a cash buyer and negotiate the price of the car on its own.[1][2]
- Loan amounts from $5,000 to $100,000.
- Fixed-rate, simple-interest loans: interest accrues daily on the unpaid principal.
- An online application from a phone, tablet or computer.
- Funding as soon as the same day you apply, if you are approved and complete the final steps in time on a banking business day.
- No appraisal of the car, and no restrictions on the car's year, make, model or mileage.
Who it suits, and who may not qualify
LightStream says its loans are approved for people with good-to-excellent credit profiles. It looks beyond the FICO score at your whole credit profile: several years of credit history across different account types, savings and other assets, income that comfortably covers existing debts plus the new loan, and a payment history with few or no problems.[5]
Loans are made to individuals for personal use only; LightStream does not lend to businesses or for business purposes.[5]
- Our view of a likely fit: established credit, low credit card balances and stable income, buying or refinancing a car you have already chosen.
- Our view of a weaker fit: a short credit history, recent late payments or high revolving debt. Because LightStream asks for good-to-excellent credit, compare other lenders' requirements before you apply.
Rates and terms, as published
These are the ranges LightStream published on September 28, 2026, the day we checked. They apply with AutoPay and can change without notice.[2][3][4]
| Loan purpose | APR range with AutoPay |
|---|---|
| New car purchase | 9.99% to 17.74% |
| Used car purchase | 9.99% to 17.74% |
| Auto refinance | 10.24% to 17.99% |
Without AutoPay, rates are 0.50 percentage points higher, and the AutoPay discount is only available if you set it up before the loan is funded. LightStream says the lowest rates require excellent credit, and that at least 33% of approved applicants who applied for the lowest rate qualified for it, based on its data from April 1 to June 30, 2026.[1][2]
Your rate depends on the loan purpose, the term, the amount, your credit profile and the payment method you choose. Across all LightStream loans the maximum APR is 25.44%, and terms range from 24 to 240 months depending on the loan type. LightStream's rate table shows the terms available for a vehicle loan once you choose the purpose and amount.[1][5]
Fees, taxes, down payment and paying off early
LightStream's FAQ says its loans do not have any fees, and that it does not charge a penalty for paying the loan off early, in whole or in part. You can make extra payments at any time from your online account.[5]
No down payment is required: you can apply for the full price of the car.[5]
Borrowing the full price means a larger loan and more total interest, so it is worth pricing a smaller loan too.
If you choose to receive the money by wire transfer, LightStream suggests checking with your own bank about any special wire instructions or wire fees. Any such fee would be charged by your bank, not by LightStream.[5]
How applying and funding work
- Check your rate on LightStream's site, then apply online. LightStream does not offer pre-approvals and does not take applications by phone, fax or email.
- The application pulls a hard inquiry from TransUnion or Equifax.
- If you are approved, you are not obliged to accept the loan. If you accept, schedule funding within 30 days of approval, otherwise the approval expires.
- Review and sign the loan agreement electronically, give your funding preferences and bank details, and complete the final verification.
- The money arrives in your personal bank account by ACH or wire transfer. It cannot be paid into a business account or a third party's account.
Funding happens Monday through Friday, except banking holidays. Same-day funding is possible on a banking business day if you are approved and finish the final steps by 2:30 p.m. Eastern time. For a same-day wire, sign in before 2:30 p.m. and schedule funding by 3 p.m. Eastern time. For ACH, sign in before 5:30 p.m. and schedule by 6 p.m. Eastern time on the day before the day you want the money.[1][5]
A hard inquiry is recorded on your credit report, so apply when you are ready to borrow rather than just to browse rates.
Limits and fine print
- The money must be used for the loan purpose you selected in the application.
- You cannot use a LightStream loan to refinance another LightStream loan, and it does not offer cash-out refinancing.
- Loans are for personal use only, not for businesses.
- You cannot change your payment due date after the loan funds.
- Published rates and terms can change without notice.
- The AutoPay discount only applies if AutoPay is set up before funding.
What to compare it with
A LightStream quote is most useful as one of several. Before you accept any car loan, ask each lender the same questions so you can compare like with like.
- Your own bank or credit union.
- Dealer financing, including any manufacturer promotions on new cars. Ask for the APR and the total cost, not just the monthly payment.
- Keeping your current loan, if a refinance would only save a small amount over the remaining term.
- What is the APR, and is it fixed?
- How many months, and what is the total repaid?
- Are there fees or state taxes, and is there a penalty for paying off early?
- Does the lender hold the car's title or a lien on the vehicle?
- Is the credit check a hard or soft inquiry?
